Bookcase is one of the country's largest independent bookshops.
300,000 carefully selected titles are housed in a fine Georgian house at the heart of Carlisle’s historic quarter.
We stock all subjects in depth and have specialist collections of Cumbrian and Scottish Topography, Natural History, Art, Fiction, Theology, History (especially Military History), and Railway books.

ABOUT BOOKCASE
We have a fine collection of antiquarian and collectable volumes kept in a beautiful eighteenth century room.
Our online catalogue carries over 30,000 titles and we welcome all enquiries. We can obtain all titles, both in-print and out-of-print, and we are pleased to quote prices with no obligation, and we post worldwide.
Our sister shop, Bookends, selling new books, is next-door. There is also a branch of Bookends in Keswick.
Bookcase has its own museum of The State Management Scheme, which tells the story of the sixty years when all the public houses in north Cumberland were run by the government. The Bookcase building was the headquarters of this unique enterprise.
Carlisle is a fascinating historic city and Bookcase is at its heart. Pay us a visit.
We are open 9.30am-5pm Monday-Saturday & 11.30am-4pm Sunday
We stock a wide range of prints and maps.
Bookcase is the leading publisher of books on Cumbria.
We carry one of the country's largest stocks of classical and jazz cds, both new and secondhand. We have an equally large selection of classical and jazz vinyl and a vast range of sheet music ranging from popular songs to orchestral scores.
Our café, Cakes & Ale, with its lovely garden, is ideal for a quiet drink, a slice of cake or a light lunch.
Every week there is something happening – an author’s talk, a quiz night, a poetry reading, an open-mic evening or a children’s story time. For more information visit www.bookscumbria.com
We are to be found when you walk from Carlisle’s cathedral towards its impressive castle. Tullie House Museum is across the road.
